KONY 2012 has been becoming more and more viral over the last week. This led me to look into what they are doing and get more information about the whole situation.

It bring about some interesting points as follows:

"Invisible Children has been condemned time and time again. As a registered not-for-profit, its finances are public. Last year, the organization spent $8,676,614. Only 32% went to direct services (page 6), with much of the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production. This is far from ideal, and Charity Navigator rates their accountability 2/4 stars because they haven’t had their finances externally audited. But it goes way deeper than that."

"The group is in favour of direct military intervention, and their money supports the Ugandan government’s army and various other military forces. Here’s a photo of the founders of Invisible Children posing with weapons and personnel of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. Both the Ugandan army and Sudan People’s Liberation Army are riddled with accusations of rape and looting, but Invisible Children defends them,arguing that the Ugandan army is “better equipped than that of any of the other affected countries”, although Kony is no longer active in Uganda andhasn’t been since 2006 by their own admission. These books each refer to the rape and sexual assault that are perennial issues with the UPDF, the military group Invisible Children is defending."

"If you want to write to your Member of Parliament or your Senator or the President or the Prime Minister, by all means, go ahead. If you want to post about Joseph Kony’s crimes on Facebook, go ahead. But let’s keep it about Joseph Kony, not KONY 2012."

There will always be 2 sides to this and logically looking at it Joseph Kony would never have got the publicity needed to bring about a change that KNOY 2012 is bringing. It does seem like a necessary evil to spend money on viral advertising but the main thing that bothers me is the misallocated money and where a lot is not accounted for though direct services that Invisible Children are carrying out, thus making them a profit organisation.

"Military intervention may or may not be the right idea, but people supporting KONY 2012 probably don’t realize they’re supporting the Ugandan military who are themselves raping and looting away. If people know this and still support Invisible Children because they feel it’s the best solution based on their knowledge and research, I have no issue with that. But I don’t think most people are in that position, and that’s a problem."

The other more important point is the supporting of the Ugandan military who are condemned for the very similar reasons as Kony is. The whole situation with the military action is that it seems to be a lesser of 2 evils.

I don't have a better answer to the problem and i am in no way condemning KONY 2012 i was just intrigued by the situation.

This is something that my mate james passed on to me today... its perfect... the motion and music work perfectly. Not only that the colour pallet in the film is something i don't see that often and i applaud it.

This just shows how a location can change so much within a short film. Antony Crooks other stuff is definitely worth checking out.

Another short post but again this is something i caught at graduate fashion week... some of the guys from fashion marketing had this song on an incredible film for a final output (i cant find it online BUT if you guys read this and know where it is give me a shout). You know when you hear something but you don't really realise? well that happened to me with this... i heard it and before i knew it i had be stood staring at the film totally zoned out.

But this film is also worth a watch... some amazing footage!

Needless to say im waiting for this album SADLY its not out till the 3rd of Oct.

___Levi's "Buy Now, Wear Forever"___

This is just a short that i did for my final Uni project entitled "Buy Now, Wear Forever". Its nice actually getting to film something interesting... i have all the time in the world to film and edit but its the content i struggle on finding. Anyway 3 weeks back me and a 9 strong team set out with smoke grenades and 3 cars and this is the end result...

Thanks again to all the guys that helped on the night could not have done it without you.

___Justice & Police Museum Collection___

I came across this by chance and i would like to tell you more about them but ill be honest i don't know that much at all! Im going to be presumptuous and say they are Tin Type photography as they look similar to that style. The content again correct me if im wrong but i believe they are mug shots?

As with Tin Type photography the photos have more depth to them and just feel more real. But have a look at the following link as now i have looked over them again i think i have posted the wrong ones haha.

___Arthur Fellig aka WEEGEE___

I came across this guy today literally as i post this... Arthur Fellig aka WEEGEE as famous back in the 1950's. He has a talent for getting to crime scenes first so much so that that someone said "Your like a weegie board, you can predict when a crime is going to be committed" thus his name. But in truth he lived behind a police station in a shack with a police radio!

WeeGee: Their First Murder Oct 1946

Their first murder is one of his most famous, its the moment the crime was just committed and the crowd seems to be in a strange ecstasy and joy.

I recommend you have a look for his work its fascinating.

___Wang Yifei___

Im not sure how i first found this image... once i saw it i could not forget it. It has a compelling quality to it that i cant put my finger on i just get pulled into it. I can only really speculate about its content as i cant really find much information on it of in fact Wang Yifei for that matter. For me this picture is more or less perfect; the colour saturation, stylisation and a narrative that makes you ask questions/want to see more.

___Jen Renninger___

This marks everyones current obsession with space and the stars and geometric shapes. There are stars everywhere from t-shirt prints to Photostats as a low opacity layer to give more depth.... don't get me wrong im all for this in fact i love it!

Here is a prime example of everything i love in one set of work. Jen's work is reminiscent of Misprinted Type and in that respect i love it!

I have been trawling through her work for the past 3 days and its incredibly inspirational so if your stuck for ideas and a dig through her site/blog.

___Panoramic___

Since one of my resent interviews i have been really interested in Tin Type photography so for me its always nice to come across old photography... BUT its even better when you come across some that you have not seem the likes of before! These photos are from the Library of Congress archives and are spectacular.

Personally i have never come across many panoramic photographs that are not army or school photographs so this set are a lovely change of pace.

___Underground Coal Fire___

This was brought to my attention a year back by Vice Tv (www.vbs.tv) and i cant seem to find the link now but its incredible. The long short of it is that a coal fire started underground years back in and abandoned mine (not sure how long im trying to find out more) and has not stopped burning. This has lead to the ground shifting and making most places unsafe to live anymore. In the coal fires wake it has left full towns abandoned. The following film/photography illustrates the strange beauty of the disaster.

___Kim Høltermand___

I came across Kim’s work a while back but I have only just found an online portfolio and it reminded me why I loved his work so much and used it a lot in trend research. Kim is a freelance architectural and landscape photographer from Denmark (a lot of the photography and design I like seems to come from there and Sweden).

Kim’s work does seem to follow a certain cool and static trend. Even his natural photographs have captured the harshness of the natural world this gives the elusion of a man made environment. By far the most impressive part of his work is how he captures the warmth and deep feeling within the things he is shooting and the visual contrast from the cold shapes to warm but chilling colours.

The Photographs I have pulled out are favourites of mine purely due to them having that little more colour even if they still have heavy sepia overtones.
